Review: Foil Star - Foil Star
Get it here.
Sublime
Really good. I mean, really. The beat is just amazing. There's so many things going on in so many different levels. It sounds vaguely like a wound-down and detuned music box is there sometimes, and everything combines to give the song the sound of dementia. It's glorious. And the lyrics, my friends, "Maggots and death, they say art is divine" wins on more levels than you can comprehend. Let us reward the innocent, and punish the guilty. My friends, we cannot keep this a secret. It's awesome.
Redemption
Another amazing beat. I think I'm going to say that for every track. And the lyrics blow my mind. The bit about "a vision of abomination" and then Ekman getting funky with feathers or whatever the heck that was... My brain kinda stopped right there and had to reboot. For both of those.
Headphones Aren't Invincible, Susan
...I don't understand this song. Or what it's about. I don't think it fits, or at least Ekman's verse seems out of place? But it's still pretty awesome.
Letting Go
This is the track that got me all psyched and pumped for the album. "How about letting go, How about giving in, To the little devil sitting in the pilot seat of sin" So awesome. I like the bells ringing, it makes it so very atmospheric. Kind of like we're at some sort of funeral, and shrouded by death and decay, when we're all vulnerable.
Angel
Best song. Hands down. Grym's opening lines just make my jaw drop. I can see the situation. (The angel looks like Christopher Walken, BTW.) The hook is the weakest part here, but then we get to Ekman being all "RIP AND TEAR MYSELF" and then verbally slams your emotions into the concrete floor before kicking your kidneys until you're screaming half in pain, half in despair.
No Miracles
The beat again is good, but it's not as good as some other tracks. I think it could have used one more layer of sound to punctuate things a bit more. But the lyrical stuff is pretty heavy, complex, and deep. I dig it.
Sanctuary
I really love the contrast between the different voices. As much as I want to say DKAID rocked it, Grym totally stole this song with his verse. Is it bad that I'm not imagining him as a horrible creature with one eye and three arms, one of which is sprouting out of the back of his neck? I'm not saying Ekman and DKAID weren't great, but Grym stepped it up with a +1 Verse of Unnerving Imagery.
The Rain
A good ending track. Even more downbeat and... sad than the other songs. "Even imaginary wouldn't do the trick" And then the breakdown at 2:20 with Ekman basically doing a monologue with no emotional support from the track, and doing it well. Very cool.
Overall
Way cool. Depressing, sickening, and awesome. Add one or two more tracks and sell it to me for $12.99.
