RIAA sink below the bottom of the scum chart, currently rating -1.5 out of 5
See for yourself.

Earlier this month the RIAA voluntarily dismissed the case—then refiled it last week but didn't mention it was the same lawsuit, which means it was assigned to a different judge.

...yeah, it sounds like that would be the sort of thing to get the RIAA Rule 11'd up the yin-yang for abuse of legal process.

No, there would probably be an 8th Amendment issue to that. >_> But basically, Rule 11 is activated if someone makes a false representation to the court that (for example) the litigation was not filed for an improper reason. If it is not withdrawn in 21 days max after the filing of a motion, and the motion is granted, then the attorneys (including the entire firm) and clients can be sanctioned with fines, injunctions, maybe even payment of the other side's attorneys fees or dismissal of some or all charges. Whatever the sanction, it has to be enough to deter future conduct.

So, TL:DR, Rule 11 is the big club that federal courts use to beat down parties that did stuff offensive to the court.
