01:31 pm - Uncle Sam Wants You (for his DNA Database)
http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/05/12/dna.database/index.html

Changes are coming at the federal level as well. The government soon will begin collecting DNA samples from anyone arrested or detained by the feds, including illegal immigrants.

"I think there is a valid public policy for doing that because there are many people who have committed crimes but who have never been convicted but have been arrested and without their DNA in the system we are not solving those crimes," said Associate Attorney General Kevin O'Connor.

That's awesome, isn't it? Get detained, for any reason, and get your DNA put in a database so they can go on a fishing expedition and destroy your life.

Fascists.

05:50 pm - Pig cop killed by citizen defending self from home invasion
Self Defense, not murder, you fascist pig lickers. Go slurp more jackbooted latex, and leave an innocent man alone. Of course you won't, because you can't have mere proles defending themselves against your tyranny.

09:37 pm - Talking at school earlier...
I was talking to someone earlier while I was up in my office, and think I should relay this story.

This person's son was married, but he and his wife were estranged. In fact they've been living apart more than they've been living together lately. The wife's dad is a lawyer and apparently sends divorce papers to the son periodically.

Wife gets mad when son dates another woman.

Wife destroys son's $2000 television, breaks a window, and otherwise vandalizes the house while her father in law (the 'person') witnesses part of it.

Son calls police. Police tell son they can't do anything because they're technically still married.

Son busts out a window on wife's car.

Son goes to jail.

One of these things is not the same...

01:54 pm - Pig Fascists Terrorize Man, Ruin Life, Get off Free
http://reason.com/blog/show/126284.html#

On January 7, 2008 fascist pigs tried to assassinate Tracy Ingle in his own home for minding his own business. Police find no evidence that he's done anything wrong, shoot him five times for thinking about defending himself, refuse to let him get medical treatment while he's in jail, and falsely arrest him. Police warrant is completely false and was issued without any sort of evidence at all. Police refuse to disclose public documents. Police terrorize an eyewitness into lying "Or else." Ingle can't afford a lawyer, or treatment for his police-inflicted injuries. The Judge is now trying to cover up his and the police's crime.

Rope. Tree. Pig cops and robed nazi. Some assembly required.

06:23 pm - Pig Cops raid wrong house, again.
http://www.nbc6.net/news/16139683/detail.html

Your 'friendly' local branch of the Allgemeine-SS breaks into a house, assaults its residents, finds nothing resembling the 'drugs' that they claim they were 'searching' for with the aid of the Ubersturmbanfuhrer 'Judge' that issued the (obviously now) poorly researched and therefor unconstitutional 'search warrant.' In this case 'search' means 'terrorize the poor immigrant'. I imagine they issue a lot of those around the country, from Chicago on down Miami, to keep the unwashed masses of brown people in-line. That the worthless pigs would name this 'Operation D-Day' shows just what they're thinking. "We're superior to them, we're a special elite class of people, and they're just the proles. We'll cloak this in righteous language, and no one will suspect it's just Kristallnacht II: The Revenge."

I hope every last one of you worthless scum, from the guy that just drove the police van there to the fascist judge that issued the search warrant, are ruined for life. Your money, your reputations, your ability to not be thrown into prison with the people you've planted evidence on and destroyed. I want it all. You are unworthy of your uniform.

You're police. You don't get the privilege of making a mistake that costs a citizen their life, limb, or property. You just don't. You are here to protect and to serve.

07:53 pm - When seconds matter...
The police are only minutes away.

Even if the dispatcher had done his job, the police were probably breaking some granny's door down, shooting her husband, and searching for the methlab in her bathroom.

06:18 pm - On Professors Suing Students
Recently there have been two cases of professors suing their (sometimes former) students.

In the former case, a thin-skinned instructor kicked off a civil rights (!) lawsuit over 'abusive' class evaluations. Believe me, not lying. I'm going to note a couple things. First, class evaluations are promised to students as being entirely anonymous and confidential. If the university releases evidence of which student wrote what comment, they deserve to be obliterated from the academic landscape. Anonymous speech is no less worthy of being protected (by a public institution) than any other speech; in some few circumstances it is perhaps more important. Regardless, revealing names like that would be a big violation of Federal law. Second, if you're so thin-skinned that "Horrible teacher!" is enough to give you the vapors, perhaps you should find an easier occupation. Really, it's so silly.

Whereas this other case differs because the students went out to deliberately and willfully destroy his career and get him kicked out of teaching. His crime? Not being black.

You tell me which of those sounds like a civil rights violation.

06:05 pm - Pig Cops break door, screw up drug raid
by raiding a house with a salt water aquarium.

Oh god! Vinegar!

SUE THE PIG COPS FOR EVERY FILTHY CENT THEY HAVE.

SUE THE CITY GOVERNMENT.

SUE THE JUDGE.

SUE THE NOSIE INFORMER THAT SNOOPED WHEN IT WASN'T HIS BUSINESS.

This kind of behavior on the part of our "public servants" is beyond the pale. One person "Hey, I smelled vinegar and pickling lime while I was working on someone's house" is not sufficient cause to authorize a raid, or an arrest. Also, you cannot bar people from speaking, cops. Only a Judge can compel or bar speech, not jackbooted fascist pig cops like you. And I don't believe it's standard business for a Judge to authorize a secret gag order as part of a search warrant. Which I'll note, if this was a meth lab, you can just knock on the door and serve your warrant without any trouble, all busting a door down does in this situation is get people shot. It's not like they can flush an entire meth lab down the crapper. It's also not like there was an immediate threat of violence or death to the occupants of the house or their neighbors to require emergency Stalin-style assaults on life and liberty. We're just lucky you loose cannons didn't decide to summarily execute them - after all they must be guilty of something, right?

01:10 pm - huh uTorrent got 'bought'?
http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=17278

This is Bram Cohen, the creator of the BitTorrent protocol, and Ludvig (Ludde) Strigeus, the writer of µTorrent.

Together, we are pleased to announce that BitTorrent, Inc. and µTorrent AB have decided to join forces. BitTorrent has acquired µTorrent as it recognized the merits of µTorrent's exceptionally well-written codebase and robust user community. Bringing together µTorrent's efficient implementation and compelling UI with BitTorrent's expertise in networking protocols will significantly benefit the community with what we envision will be the best BitTorrent client.

What does this mean for the µTorrent community? Not much, at least not at first. The intention is to maintain the website as it is, and keep the forums and community active. Moving forward behind the scenes, we will continue to develop µTorrent and will be using the codebase in other applications, especially ones where a fast, lightweight implementation is more suitable, such as embedded systems on TVs, cell phones, and other non-PC platforms.

The existent µTorrent and BitTorrent communities are immensely valuable to us, which is why we are announcing this here first to make sure you're all the first to know about the news. The plan is to continue to foster the health and growth of the community that has been critical to the success of µTorrent. Thank you in advance for your support.

Bram and Ludde

I guess I should save older versions of uTorrent before they start the code bloat.

11:08 am - "Copyright Owners" try to screw you over. More.
http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20080407-patry-copyright-owners-wants-rights-expanded-to-were-rabbit-size.html

Fair use and fair dealing put limitations on these otherwise exclusive rights, and they do so on the theory that copyright is not an absolute right to control and profit from every single use of a particular work. News reporting, classroom use, commentary, parody; in the US, at least, these don't require either permission or payment. But content owners aren't necessarily down with this way of thinking, and copyright expert William Patry believes that a "counter-reformation" is in the works to crimp worldwide plans to expand fair use.

09:55 pm - Rumors about the Australian Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission
Word on the street is that the Commissioner, Tom Calma, is an unrepentant racist. He should clearly recuse himself of his duties until such time as these allegations are cleared up and he's served his jail time.

11:15 am - Tuberculosis
I just saw in Monday's issue of the university paper (The Daily Beacon) that the number of TB cases is up this year, at least in Tennessee. Granted, 'up' means going from 27 to 41, so it's not epidemic. However, I do find it frightening because TB is a) very scary and b) developing resistances to common treatment courses.

08:03 am - "Adults"
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23908375/

"I was trying to get her angry so she would leave him alone and I could get rid of the whole MySpace," Grills said.

Grills said she tried to commit suicide in the wake of Megan's death. She said she rarely leaves her house.

Drew has been villified by many in her community since news of Megan's suicide became public. Prosecutors have declined to file charges in Missouri, though several communities have either adopted laws, or are considering measures, to penalize Web-based harassment.

I know, somewhere lurking is another post by me on this topic. But I couldn't find in the five seconds I spent looking for it. So you'll have to live without a link to it. :p

12:43 pm
http://www.pediatricnews.com/article/S0031-398X(08)70114-0/fulltext

All cases were unvaccinated, including eight whose parents had claimed personal belief exemptions. In fact, 10% of the 350 children in the index child's school—kindergarten through 9th grade—were unimmunized because of these sorts of such exemptions, said Dr. Seward, acting deputy director of the CDC's division of viral diseases, National Center for Immunizations and Respiratory Diseases. The other four children were unimmunized because three were less than 12 months of age and therefore too young to be vaccinated and the fourth had received her routine vaccination 6 days after the unrecognized exposure.

At the time of publication in the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, the episode had necessitated quarantine of 70 children who lacked evidence of immunity (MMWR 2008;57:[early release]1–4).

And this, people, is why you should shove that "personal belief" exemption up your fat, uneducated, hippie ass. This isn't like vaccinating for something people can only get through difficulty (i.e. smallpox, anthrax...), this is something that can KILL PEOPLE and the vaccine has VERY SMALL CHANCES OF BEING HARMFUL. You should be barred from getting any money from the government to 'help' you because of your stupid, uninformed, and selfish decision, and you should be liable to anyone who comes in contact with you and gets sick. When you're financially ruined and deported to a leper colony, maybe you'll reconsider your inconsiderate decision.

07:59 pm - Siegel heirs awarded Action Comics #1 copyright
http://blog.newsarama.com/2008/03/28/siegel-heirs-awarded-action-comics-1-copyright/

“After seventy years,” Larson writes in his concluding paragraph, “Jerome Siegel’s heirs regain what he granted so long ago — the copyright in the Superman material that was published in Action Comics Vol. 1. What remains is an apportionment of profits, guided in some measure by the rulings contained in this Order, and a trial on whether to include the profits generated by DC Comics’ corporate sibling’s exploitation of the Superman copyright.”

It's awesome to see a (relatively) big company get bit, and hard, by the copyright laws they bribe Congress into passing so they can fleece consumers.

Remember, whatever you do, don't sing Happy Birthday in a restaurant.

01:01 am - Cops bust teens' root-beer kegger
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23851011/

Hey Fascists, why don't you go fight real crime instead of picking on teenagers that are intentionally baiting you? Did you actually have any probably cause to suspect they had been drinking? Did you administer the tests before or after you saw them skillfully and non-drunkenly pull their cars out of the way?

You do not have a "duty" to go busting into someone's party and illegally forcing the people there to undergo your tests. I'm pretty sure it's freaking assault to grab someone and force them, under penalty of getting beaten like Rodney King, to take a breathalyser test when you have absolutely no probable cause to suspect they are drunk or further that the person was going to drive.

I can only imagine the scenario:

"Hey boss, we've got 20 clean kids, and a keg of rootbeer. And they're not walking like they're drunk, and doing okay driving."

"THOSE ROTTEN SHITMONGERS MUST BE A FRONT FOR THE REAL PARTY! ILLEGALLY SEARCH THE PREMISES FOR THE BEER, I WANT IT FOR MYSE-- EVIDENCE."

"Sure boss." *grope underage breasts while 'administering' the breathalyser test*

Worthless stupid pig cops. There are real crimes out there. After getting them to move their cars, you should have went and attended to them. You know, rape, murder, burglary, breaking and entering. Those sorts of things. You were not protecting, and you were not serving, so what in the name of Al Gore were you doing?

This rant has been brought to you by Serigo: Little, Texan, Different. Ask your Doctor about new Serigo. Now available in 5 mg tablets.

(It should be obvious, but I'm mostly non-serious above. I'm sure they were just going by the book. But it annoys me when the Police spend their time - and that means our money - harassing citizens, instead of staying cruising around so they can have a deterrent effect on crime in a wider area.)

04:40 pm - Shortening the yellow signals
http://blogs.knoxnews.com/knx/silence/archives/2008/03/two_tn_cities_b.shtml

While that's about two other cities, I can speak from experience here in Knoxville and say that they're always screwing with the traffic light at the street I have to turn out of. A lot of traffic goes through that intersection, so I wonder why they're always changing the timing? Hm...
